Erin here..
I found this to be very informative..many of us are asking why...why do so many hate Americans. The Summit document below offers some very good explanations and information....

these attacks have had the opposite effect on us from what I think the terrorists were trying to instill in us.......fear enough to paralyze us..to keep us at a stand still and curb our lives, diminish our strength of heart, spirit destroy our country....

Instead, these attacks have brought all Americans together...We have inside us all such a great resolution to protect our country..to bring to justice those who did this henious crime....those cowards who must use innocents to try to intimidate us into the total lack of belief in ourselves and our great Country..and our President...Despite our differences...we are all Americans!

I thank President Bush for his calm and gentle nature comforting those who have lost so much....and leading us further into ourselves and our strength...while showing us the steel in his eyes.....that relays to us his conviction to do what we must do to stop terrorism....to make war on terrorism.....so that we, and future generations, may be safe and never experience the horror.....the shock...the grief....that All of Americans did on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001.....when we were attacked by terrorists...their use of weapons is a travesty....a tragedy...it shows their utter disregard for life...including their own...these tactics and others we must guard against now and in the future...

We Grieve......We heal.....We maintain the courage of our beliefs and convictions.....that the USA is still the greatest Country..

God Bless America! The Land of the free and the home of the brave!

I stood outside last night with a candle...and will every night at sunset....up and down the street cars beeped and I heard shouts of
USA....USA....USA....is alive and strong

I hope others will join go outside at sunset with a candle....I leave my candle lit after I can hold it no longer.......(they are in a glass container.for safety and to protect from the wind)..

May our hearts and candles burn brightly and boldly so that the world may witness that the Spirit of America is burning just as brightly...boldly....and in Unity!

We stand as one..We are not divided...

Subject: Summit On Domestic TerrorismJ uly 11, 2001

Attorney General Prepared Remarks
[NOTE: THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OFTEN DEVIATES FROM PREPARED REMARKS]
Summit On Domestic Terrorism
July 11, 2001
Thank you. It is good to be back with members of the National Governors Association. They say you
can’t go home again but I’m not sure that is true. I was the chairman of this great organization back in 1991. That
was ten years and several lifetimes ago.
Last week marked the five-month anniversary of my swearing-in as the United States Attorney General.
Sometimes I feel like my predecessor, William French Smith, who, on the occasion of his successor’s swearing in,
warned Ed Meese, “Ed, there will be days in this job when you will feel a lot like the captain of the Olympic javelin
team who won the toss and then elected to receive.”
The issue that brings us here today – domestic preparedness – is a fundamental responsibility of public
service. The National Governors Association must be commended for the leading role it has played – particularly in
partnership with the Department of Justice – in preparing public servants, communities and leaders alike to be
vigilant against the threat of domestic terrorism. This Summit is the next step in our collective efforts to shape the
policies and programs our nation needs.
As state emergency management officials, public health officers, law enforcement executives, and policy
advisors to governors, you represent key players in our nation’s system of domestic preparedness -- our “first
responders.” These are the men and women who were the first to take in the horrific scene at the Murrah Building
in Oklahoma City, and the first to enter the smoke and chaos of the World Trade Center. Everyday, in ways that
will never make the front pages, they help make our lives safer and our property more secure.
As public officials our responsibility is not to overstate the threat of chemical, biological, and radiological
terrorism to our communities but to be clear-eyed about the potential for such an attack. Above all we must be
vigilant about the prevention of attacks utilizing weapons of mass destruction. And we must be prepared to mitigate
the damage to human life and property should our worst fears come true.
Although it is often dressed up in the rhetoric of a cause or a purpose, terrorism is a crime, plain and
simple. The perpetrators of terrorist attacks often claim they are only doing what is necessary to achieve justice.
But what they call courage is cowardice, and what they call justice is lawlessness.
The United States is a nation of laws, and justice is the product of the equal and vigorous enforcement of
these laws. When a person commits a crime against the lives and property of citizens of the United States, it is not
an act of courage or justice. It is an attack on the rule of law.
When the terrorist attacks a building, a city, or a structure, he attacks the foundations of self-government.
He attacks our democracy – our freedom. He seeks to plant the seed of doubt in the minds of the people about the
government’s ability to carry out its most fundamental responsibility: to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
It is entirely appropriate, then, that the Department of Justice is responsible for the investigation and
prosecution of terrorist acts that violate U.S. law, wherever they occur. The Department of Justice’s terrorism
enforcement program is one which has had an opportunity to be fine-tuned through experience -- and continues to be
adjusted to meet the evolving nature of terrorism. In comparison, our involvement in consequence management
preparations is fairly new. In this area, as well, we have made significant progress.
When terrorism strikes within our borders, the Department of Justice’s counterterrorism efforts require
close coordination not only with other federal agencies but also with state and local agencies. As a former governor,
I understand and appreciate the challenges posed by the threat of domestic terrorism in our states and in our nation.
When a major terrorist incident occurs that overwhelms state resources, we can provide significant federal
resources to assist. In such an incident -- as in Oklahoma City -- the Federal Bureau of Investigation assumes the
lead role in crisis response. The Federal Emergency Management Agency assumes the lead role in consequence
